Fresco is the Italian word for "fresh" and in Pakistan it is referred to as Naqaashi. Fresco painting is done on fresh, wet plaster walls. The colors really sink in to the plaster, giving a glowing kind of color that is very different from what is just painted on top of the dry plaster.
The fresco technique is particularly difficult to learn and master. Fresco Painting has been one of the most favorite media of architectural decorations since the don of history in subcontinent. It has been use to decorate the Mosques and Mausoleum Temples and Stupas. The earliest of this series are found in the mehrab of the tomb of Sheikh AlaudeenMauj-e-Driya at Pakpattan. Similarly the original Frescos are found at tomb of Sultan Ali Akbar at Multan. The fabulous buildings erected by Mughal emperor Akbar and his successors at Lahore, Agra, Delhi, Fatehpur and else where possess some exquisite examples of this type of decoration. The best preserved fresco painting belongs to the days of Jahangir and Shahjahan.
